CIPE recently announced the winners of the 2009 International Youth Essay competition. Out of a total of 660 submissions from 106 countries for the three categories of the competition (Citizenship in a Democratic Society; Entrepreneurship and Leadership; Educational Reform and Employment), twelve essays were selected by a panel of judges comprising CIPE’s partners from think tanks all over the world, as well as CIPE staff.
Irina Alionte from Romania is the author of the essay that was awarded the first prize in the section “Educational Reform and Employment”. While preparing to obtain her bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, Irina is also working as Marketing Manager for a private language center in Bucharest. Last but not least, she is preparing to apply for a master’s degree at a British university in the hopes of becoming trained to own and manage her own business.
Behind her participation in the International Youth Essay competition stands a strong belief that education is of critical importance for the future of the Romanian society. Irina’s essay, “Youth Reforms in the Romanian Context”, shows the trajectory of the Romanian educational system from the communist era to this day, and highlights the need for a more sustained effort to provide adequate educational opportunities and career paths for the Romanian youth. Her essay can be read here.
