CIPE Regional Office staff Camelia Bulat (Program Director) and Carmen Stanila (Deputy Director) recently travelled to Algeria to deliver two training seminars on effective management and public policy advocacy for business associations.
The first two-day seminar took place in Alger (May 22-23, 2011) and was attended by 20 representatives of organizations in the region. The presentations covered an extensive array of issues pertaining to proper organization management, including: the role of business support organizations in supporting the development of the business community in Algeria; good association governance; analyzing the environment and markets of organizations; analyzing members’ needs and expectations, membership recruitment and retention; and analyzing organizations’ programs and services.

The two training sessions were complemented by a roundtable (May 24, 2011), which was facilitated by CIPE Regional Office Program Director Camelia Bulat and Middle East and North Africa Program Officer Pamela Beecroft. The roundtable gave the participants an opportunity to discuss specific issues of concern, as well as to delve deeper into the topics discussed previously and to obtain customized advice from CIPE’s experts. Additionally, CIPE programs were discussed, as related to the interests of the participants and the types of projects that are needed in the region.
The second seminar covered two and a half days, and was organized in Oran (May 25-26, 2011) for 18 representatives of organizations in the region. In addition to the topics discussed during the first seminar, the seminar included presentations on income sources and public policy advocacy. A roundtable (May 28, 2011) followed the intensive seminar.

The participants expressed their interest in and need for CIPE’s approach to organization management issues, as well as their commitment to promoting the development of the business community in the Algerian context based on CIPE assistance.
