CIPE recently organized the international conference “Democracy that Delivers for Women”, on June 20-21, 2011, in Washington, D.C., as part of CIPE’s “Democracy that Delivers” conference series. In CIPE’s opinion, democracy that delivers means tangible outcomes; electoral promises translated into actions; accountability; and opportunities for active participation in policymaking.
This year’s edition, which was attended by more than 250 guests, focused on analyzing and deepening understanding of several contemporary issues of great importance to women: political and economic empowerment, civil and property rights, entrepreneurship, corporate governance, as well as the role of women in democratic reform, leadership, education and women and women’s role in peace building and post-conflict reconstruction.
CIPE’s emphasis on women in the context of its 2011conference was based on the conviction that women’s political, economic and social empowerment is crucial to building a “democracy that delivers”. Through their activism in civil society organizations, but also as entrepreneurs, women contribute to the creation of more democratic societies around the world.
More than 30 speakers representing a variety of countries and professional fields shared their insights on the major themes of the conference. CIPE Regional Office Program Director Camelia Bulat facilitated a session on successful women’s business associations and shared the positive example set by the Coalition of Women’s Business Associations (CAFA) in Romania, which CIPE helped create in 2004, as well as other coalitions in the Balkans. Bulat mentioned the successes and obstacles that CAFA has encountered over time and emphasized that the key to success for any coalition – regardless of its nature – is perseverance, hard work and an unrelenting ambition to make a difference.
